  1. Yes, there are legitimate credit repair services out there. Otherwise, there would be no credit repair services with positive BBB ratings and the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) would make credit repair companies illegal instead of simply regulating how they can operate (ie protect you from being scammed). Put simply, the FTC would not allow the hundreds of credit repair companies across the nation to continue with their business if the whole industry was a scam.

Hundreds of thousands of people have seen great success with credit repair companies so trust them before you trust blanket statements like "all credit repair companies are scams".

This is not to say that there are no credit repair companies that are scams.  They exist so you should definitely do some research before handing over your credit card. Start by looking over CROA paying special attention to sections 404 and 405 (first link below).  These sections explain what things a credit repair company can and cannot do as well as what your rights are when dealing with a credit repair company.  Then, take a look at some of the attached links for more information about shopping for a credit repair company.

  3. Short and easy answer.  No ... they are ALL SCAMS.   Anybody that tells you they can quickly "repair" your credit is a scammer or worse ... offering to do something illegal.

Avoid these things like the plague.   Start doing the right things .. .pay your bills on time, etc. and you'll see your credit start to improve within 3-6 months .... and a Lot of improvement after 2 years.   It takes time ... but it's the only way to legitimately improve your scores.

  4. There are Legitimate services that will help you "consolidate" and pay less of your over all debt over time - they will however damage your credit for the next few years since it is pretty much a "voluntary bankruptcy". You should start by going to the library and researching books that help you improve your own credit rating by paying your debt and teach you to negotiate with your creditors to make payments you can afford and on the due date you can afford them. Some people never realize you can change your due date (sometimes for a small fee) and even ask for a lower interest or a temporary halt on interest charges to give you the opportunity to pay off the debt. With the state of financial affairs as it is today there are some very real and viable options. Only you can make the decision as to what will work best for you. I do suggest you try being your own "debt service" before finding one. Good Luck!
