I got an SAT score of 1800, a french subject test score of 800, an ACT score of 27 (not including the writing which hasn't been scored yet). I'm planning on retaking the SAT again to get a higher score but how do I compare already?

I'm looking at schools such as NYU, BU, BC, Chicago U, Northwestern, Northeastern, Fordham, etc.

  1. Yeah, sorry, have to agree. Maybe you should retest.

  2. The French score is awesome but you want to try to get up the other two.  By the way-the composite score doesn't change with the writing. Retake both of the tests in the fall like you were planning to, my act went from a 27 to a 29 which is a big difference to these schools.  Right now, the scores are low for NYU, BC, University of Chicago, and Northwestern, but you are in a good range for Northeastern and Fordham.

  3. I hate to break it to you, but NYU and BU and the others are schools with standards. Frankly, a 1800 or a 27 is not going to cut it. Unless you retake your tests and get higher scores, I wouldn't bother trying.

    Cheers!

  4. the person who said nyu and bu have standards is correct, and northwestern's standards are just as high if not higher. i am a student at northwestern, and i appplied 3 years ago and was rejected with a 3.8 (my sat scores were very high but i couldnt tell you an exact number-long time ago). i built my gpa up to a 4.0 and was excepted. another very important factor is extra-curriculars. if you dont have any, you wont get in. by the way, there is no chicago university. since your list of schools is pretty prestigous, i would assume youre talking about university of chicago (university of illinois isnt a top school and chicago state is almost considered a community college). university of chicago and northwestern are the two top schools in the state of illinois, and always grace the top 20 list of universities in the united states. your sat scores are secondary to your gpa. if you have a 3.5 gpa, you probably wont get into nu or u of c- their standards are much higher, and their average accepted student has a gpa of 3.85-4.0. if your gpa is a 3.8 or higher you have a shot, but your sat scores arent as high as most of their accepted students. 1800 is the average accepted score for students accepted to depaul university (its also in chicago), and this school does not come CLOSE to being as prestigious or highly regarded as u of c or northwestern. its ranked 5 or 6 in the city of chicago alone. you should take them again or lower your standards of what college you want to go to- they are all looking for the top students in the nation (northwestern and u of c especially LOVE national merit scholars) and if you arent quite up to par, im sorry to say, you just wont get in. good luck!
