Are these people rude?

Question

You see, we're a Filipino family. We ate at Keno's and we were placed in the nicest part of the diner with all whites in it. Now there was this group of whites who I caught was staring at us while we were eating and I KNOW were talking about us. I even looked the lady, a part of their group, in the eye and she still stared! Thick-skinned! Caught them whispering to each other.

ooooh.. Such things get on my nerves...

Now are they RACIST or just REALLY RUDE?

Also, could I have your reactions please.

How come you assume they were whispering about your race. You could have had a booger on you. Maybe it was something completely different then you think. Don't assume that all white people are racists. It sounds like you are the one worried about the "whites", that's all you saw was the whites, you have no idea what they were saying.  It stricks me as funny that ethnic people think that whites are all racists, but from what I have seen it is a global issue, every race has racists.

It's impossible to say if they were racist, since we don't know what they were saying...they might have been wishing they had your family's beautiful skin and hair.

But unquestionably, it was rude of them to stare at you during dinner.  Next time, you should smile and wave...there's nothing like killing them with kindness!

She may have thought you were talking about her. You shouldn't have stared at them even if they might have been talking about you. You don't know that they were. You know what happens when you assume (It makes an a** out of u and me). I think if they were talking about you then yes, it was very rude. I don't know if I'd call it racist, but definately rude. Just ignore people.

Yes, they were rude.  It's nothing to get all worked up about though.  It becomes racism when they quit whispering.  The fact is, you do not know what these people were whispering about.  You can only guess.  My advise to you would be to not worry about what people are doing or saying.  Just mind your own business and do what you want to do.

Of course it is rude for anyone to stare but we don't know their reasons.  I like to think there is only two reasons.   The first your family is just so darn attractive they could not control themselves. Or secondly they were so beneath you they were trying to comprehend.  Either way it is not worth your time thinking about them and I certainly would not have let it ruin my family dinner.  Anyone that would stare is not very good at picking up subtleties like you looking back at her, it has to me more obvious for those types.  You have to be bolder with those types.  why not just go over to the table and ask; "Excuse me I noticed you staring at us, do we know each other?"  I own restaurants and have seen people do this! I personally love it when they just wink back or blow them a kiss, they get that.  But yes people will just get up and go over to them and ask "Can I help you?"  They usually just say something back like , "Oh, I thought you were the family that lives down the street from us." or "Oh I thought you go to our church." Something like that.  Or if you really want a chuckle go over and ask something that would really embarrass them; "Do you go by the stage name of California? or Heaven Leigh or Candy Kiss  or any other stripper name you can think of, I am a fan of yours!

Yes they were rude but don't pull the race card immediately. They were probably pitiful people who are used to ridiculing anybody that walks past them. They criticize jewelry, your fashion, etc. These are the types that have very boring lives and have nothing better to do.

You should have asked the manager to seat you at another table to avoid the discomfort. Yes it's easy to say ignore but I wouldn't feel comfortable eating with staring problem people!

in restaurants it is rude to stare at another table even though they are staring at you

A wave could have diffused the situation then & there.

Yes it was rude of them to stare & whisper. But, it was rude of you to stare back!!  

You have as much right as anyone else to eat where ever you like... but were they racist?  No one will ever know and honestly you should not let things like this bother you.  

Dont sweat the small stuff!  Its not worth it!
