Question:

Are these people selling 3 wk old rabbits? Animal Abuse?

I don't really want to look into this myself, but I think someone should. There's an add in my paper that reads:

rabbits, three weeks old, small size, great pet, $6.00 each (518)265-7716 / (518) 653-3905

I am not sure if they are selling these rabbits to leave right now, in which case they could die since 3 week old rabbits are just starting to nibble on food. I don't have the guts to call and find out, and I don't want to be a nosey annoying person that calls the ASPCA at the drop of a pin.

  1. wow, rabbits are just starting to eat grass, hay and food by then. That is so animal abuse!!

  2. I see why you dont want to call them yourself. Im sorry but I cant call them cause my phone is dead but I will pass it on to people asking them to call it and find out. I am a member of the ASPCA so It should be easy.

  3. No rabbit should be separated from its mother before 6 weeks of age.

I would simply call them and ask "when are they going to be ready?"  And if they respond that they're selling them now (at 3 weeks of age), I would tell them you're not interested because the rabbit is going to get sick and die if it's taken away from its mother at that age.

It might be a typing error in the ad, the breeder may be putting them on reserve now for when they are weaned, or it may just be someone who is truly ignorant and doesn't know what they're doing.

For $6 each, whoever is selling them is not going to be any kind of reputable breeder, anyway.  You've found an ad from a BYB of the rabbit world, my friend.

If they are selling them at that age, a phone call to the local ASPCA would probably do some good, at least enough to educate people that probably have no business breeding animals in the first place.

  4. its not animal abuse but its not right! i would act the same way! before you call though find out if they are selling them now or later

  5. Its much better to be safe than sorry.

Tell the ASPCA that you could have miss understood the advert but could they call and make sure the rabbits are not being taken away from there mother so early.

They will sort it all out and you can relax knowing that everything is being sorted out.
