Question:

Are these rings on my state quarters flaws?

I have all 50 proof state quarters from the San Francisco mint. The older ones have light brown rings on the rims. What are these, and do they decrease the value of the quarters? I think they are caused by air in the plastic container.

  1. Do you mean the rims are turning a brown color? If so it is from some contaminate in the air where they have been stored. Proof set holders are not air tight. Are the coins in the original holders or are they in non mint one. If the edges of proof coins are held with out coin gloves they get contaminated from the items on are hands as well as sweat. At a future date they can be dipped, to get it off but it must be done with care and no rubbing. The place you have them stored may be too humid.

  2. The brown rims is probably the copper that is in the Quarters.
