Question:

Are they BSing me?

Currently my parents have 3 cars.

I'm getting my drivers license soon so I need auto insurance.

When I called by insurance company, they said that if i get auto insurance, then I MUST be listed as a primary driver on 1 of the three cars and I CAN'T be listed as an occasional driver (if I'm listed as primary on one of the cars, then my auto insurance is ALOT more expensive).

So... is the insurance company BSing me or is that a fact?

  1. I just called American Family Insurance for you. here's the scope if there are 3 cars and 3 drivers then you must be listed as a primary driver to one of those cars if you family only had one car then you could be listed as an occasional driver but you shouldn't have to get insurance on your own just added to your parents plan.. sorry guys i got this straight from an agent that is also a friend

  2. Okay, your question is a little vague, and the answers given reflect different readings of it.

A - If you are talking of getting your own insurance, you will be declaring as a primary driver on a car.  In other words, if you called on your own behalf, it is NOT BS!

B - If you are talking of being added to your parents' policy, then your parents have to add you, you can't add yourself, and you will be an occasional driver.

If your parents own the cars, and are not planning on giving you one, you are an occasional driver.  This assumes you are a dependent living at home, of course, you haven't given your age, student status, or living arrangements, which could change the applicable answer completely.

  3. BS! You do NOT need to be a primary driver on any car. As long as your parent are allowing you to drive and put you anywhere on the insurance, the state will permit that. To be sure, check you local DMV website.

  4. Depends on the state law.  In many states, they are allowed to demand that any licensed driver living in the household is a primary driver on one of the cars.  Do you really think they believe you when you say you are only going to be driving "occasionally" if you live right there and have a license?  They have no way of checking how often you drive, and if you get into an accident you can always say you only drove occasionally.  It doesn't work like that.

  5. its bs

or the company is c**p talk to your parents about finding a diff insurance carrier

  6. They are not BSing you. If you do not currently hold insurance with another provider then you need to be a primary driver. Insurance companies are not stupid. And yes of course your insurance is going to be high because you are a new first time drivier.

When i first got my license i had to be the primary driver on the NEWEST vehicle.

  7. BS. When you call they always ask if they will be anyone else driving the car. If that was the case, companies with a lot of cars couldn't do it.
