I think "fruit punch" is called "フルーツ ポンチ" in Japan.

"Anmitsu", "fruit punch" in English and "フルーツ ポンチ" in Japan.

Are they all the same in Japan?

  1. Very funny!

  2. Well, there are actually different types of Anmitsu and フルーツポンチ in Japan. And depending on a restaurant and family, the stuff they use for Anmitsu and フルーツポンチwould be different.

Anmitsu is written 餡蜜 in Japanese. 餡 (an) means sweet bean paste and 蜜(Mitsu) means syrup. So usually when people order Anmitsu, it needs to have some sort of sweet bean paste or sweet beans. And also it needs to have some sort of syrup. And depending on a restaurant, whatever they use for Anmitsu would be different. The kind that I like has rice flour dumplings and maccha ice cream and macha jello and azuki beans. Anyway, you can go to the following website and you can see what I'm talking about: http://ameblo.jp/bimi2531/theme-10002464...

On the website you can also find other kinds of Anmitsu. And other than those kinds of Anmitsu, we do have Anmitsu that come with fruits like this:

    http://img01.hamazo.tv/usr/sengetsu3/fa0...

And we call the Anmitsu " Fruit Anmitsu."

And for フルーツポンチ, we ususally don't put sweet bean paste. We use a bunch of different kinds of fruits with syrup. Some people like to include rice flour dumplings. And when we add rice flour dumplings for フルーツポンチ, we say that's "Shiratama フルーツポンチ”

And for fruit punch like this one to drink: http://www.worldofstock.com/slides/PFO43...

    we call it "フルーツパンチ".

So フルーツポンチis for eating fruits out of a bowl. And フルーツパンチis for drinking out of a glass. I know that フルーツポンチ and フルーツパンチ look so similar. But フルーツポンチ is for eating and フルーツパンチ is for drinking. And Anmitsu needs to have sweet beans.

  3. What they call "fruit punch" in Japan is not a drink.  It is a dessert made with azuki beans, fruit, and gelatin cubes made from agar(seaweed).
