  1. no of course not

  2. Sometimes they'll blindfold them to get them in the starting gate, but it's always removed before the race.

Blinkers and shadow rolls restrict the horse's vision so he won't spook or react to things around him, but he has to be able to see where he's going.

  3. they do not use full blindfolds they use blinkers which allows the horse to see ahead but not the horses either side of them.

They are used primarily for horses which are slightly nervous.

  4. no, they do use pieces of equipment called....... blinkers and winkers!

these are used to stop the horse looking around, by blocking its periferial vision!

the only time a blindfold is used is on a horse thats not real keen on going in to the starting barriers or (gates) tho once the horse is in the blindfold is removed!

  5. I don't think so, for safety reasons. The horse could fall over and get injured and so could the person riding it.

  6. they do sometimes put them on to put the horse into the barrier but do not race blind folded not in australia anyway

  7. The only time a blindfold is used is to load into the gates. They remove it before the start of the race.

  8. The answers below regarding "thoroughbred" racing are correct. A horse may be blindfolded to help load the horse into the starting gate, then it is removed. A horse may also wear the "blinkers" to avoid the horse looking around and stay more focused on running. HOWEVER, the answer to your question is yes in "standardbred" or "harness" racing, as rarely a horse with a trotting gait will be fitted with a "full hood"and the horse races literally blindfolded. This is used to help the horse maintain it's trotting gait. A full hood is usually a last resort effort for a horse which tends to not be able to maintain his gait.
