Maybe they make vinegar because there's lots of sour grapes in Thailand.

In Laos they sell a brand called 4 Avatars. Its rather dry and has no personality.

  1. In Nakhon Nayok is The Khlong Tha Dan Dam. When you drive down the hill from the d**n you get to a local market at the bottom. In the market a local winery sells its wine which is some of the most delicious wine I have ever drunk (- and I have fully tested the limits of a corporate expense account when younger so I've drunk a fair amount of good wine). They have two ages available the older one, no suprises, being more expensive than the younger but neither is very expensive. Unfortunately, I can't remember its name. I remember I ran word searches on the net on the name and address on the bottle when I first drank it a year or so ago and remember nothing much came up.

[Added: I wish I knew who the 4 Avatars bit was aimed at.]

  2. There are several at Khao Yai Area, I have been to Khao Yai Wineries one time. They made some wine i could not remember the name.

Last time i tasted it , it's wet (because raining) and good personality (The girl who showed me the wine)

  3. Is a Whinery where you go to cry in your Zinfandel? - yeah - sour grapes and all - I get it - yes - sort of a new and growing industry as stated above

  4. Yes there is whinery in North Thailand producing white wine, its rather sour and young wine.

  5. Yes, there are many. One of them is Chauteau de Luear (as in the province I can't spell it in English), belong to the guy who owns ital-Thai, make pretty good wine but more expensive than Mouton Cadet. There are many wineries around Khao Yai area, Chiang Mai, and also now in Petchaburi and Cha-am.

The family who produce Spy (wine cooler) has moved up to produce pretty good wine. The problem is Thai wines in Thailand cost more than French wine because they are taxed the same as French wine, and because French wine produced outside the country, when the importers import them, they mark down the price (and do lots of under table staff) to make them declare cheaper price and therefore small tax. I'm not complaining.

I'm not really an expert of wine and do not drink lots of them, so I can afford to drink the top five Grand Cru at times. You know some of the Grand Cru from Bordeaux are same price as Thai good wine.

  6. When I travel out on Rama 2 road around Samut Songkram  I always see this sign for a Winery.  I never seen the place.  Maybe someday I will go investigate.
