My daughter was diagnosed with ADD, CAPD, and a Learning Disability in the areas of reading and writing. In our schools, they do not have any "dyslexia", just learning disabilities. Is this now what it is being called? NOT dyslexia, but a disability with reading and writing???? Confused!!!!!! There are still support groups for dyslexia... and audio books for dyslexics!!!! Very confused!!!!!!

  1. A learning disability in the area of reading is broader in scope than the term dyslexia. Dyslexia specifically effects word recognition. A learning disability in reading refers to either a Broad Reading or Reading Comprehension issue. If a student has disability in Broad Reading than they most likely have dyslexic tendencies (decoding and word recognition issues). A disability in Reading Comprehension means the student can decode but does not understand the content (not dyslexic). Typically, districts do not test for dyslexia under special education because if a disability in Broad Reading is identified, the recommendations for teaching/learning would be the same as what dyslexia testing would reveal. You do not need a dyslexia label to get services for dyslexia. These same services and supports should be available with the reading disability label.

  2. In my district it is a medical diagnosis which teachers can't make. Here is another reason:

  3. Sorry your daughter has such challenges. I have found this website useful for reading and listening to text at the same time. The site is called YAKiToMe! and it's free.

  4. To schools, dyslexia is a visual processing deficit.  It is a disability in the area of reading.  I'm sure that the psych who did the testing recognized that she transposed letters and had trouble reading, but to us (I'm a social worker), dyslexia is simply a medical term for a specific disability.  It would be treated the same and the special and general education staff would be well aware of how best your daughter learns.  Support groups and literature regarding dyslexia exist because, on the whole, society runs on the "medical model."

  6. dyslexia isnt an educational diagnosis. there is a difference between a psychological/medical diagnosis and educational criteria.. A person can be diagnosed as 315.00 reading disability in the DSM-4-TR and an educational criteria as learning disorder.
