I found an apartment from craig's list, and the guy was not a psycho, but you need to beware, anyway.  People are sometimes quite misleading.  The "entire first floor" in Rome that I rented was actually a dirty basement in a suburb, 50 minutes away from Rome by bus.  The guy wouldn't give me my deposit back when I moved out, either.  So you should definitely check the place out and meet the person before you rent.  It's worth it to stay in a hostel or B&B for a week, first.
