  1. They are in no way going away soon. Most of the Vista operating systems are 32bit.

  2. 32 bit operating systems are still the standard as most commercial applications and home applications do not run on 64 bit OS'es. Even the current Microsoft OS Vista comes in both 32 bit and 64 bit flavors.

  3. The 32-bit operating system will become obsolete for sure!

One of the first reason will be the 2038 32-bit Integer bug. That means that on 9-Jan-2038, 3:14:07 AM GMT, the number of seconds since 1-Jan-1970 (called EPOCH time) will be above 2 147 483 647 (2^(32 - 1)). One second later, most operating systems will reset back to 1970...

This might actually be a bug worse than the Y2k bug... It will require people to:

    1- Change to a 64-bit machine, OR

2- Modify their code to take this limit into consideration.

Most probably by then, most people will have changed their hardware, but many companies by still be running 32-bit system on older pieces of hardware.

Other than that, the 64-bit systems, combined with 64-bit optimized software, do give an interesting performance increase on some mathematically-intensive programs. So for performance reasons, they will become more and more popular.

    Hope this helps! Good luck!

  4. Of course they are still making them. And as long as software developers stick to the 32-bit architecture, they are going to continue making them.

For example, I run a machine with 32-bit XP, 32-bit Vista, and 64-bit Vista triple booted. Some programs run better on 64, some don't run at all, and some run better on 32.

At this point, I think it's more a matter of preference, and computer use.

  5. not so much anymore
