The medals given to the Chinese athletes are pure gold.  The thing is that they don't get to keep it and the government takes it back.

The medals are gold plated silver in the case of gold medals, nearly all silver for silver medals, and bronze for the bronze medals. They have a different colored jade for each medal.

They wouldn't be dumb enough to make the Olympic medals out of lead.

Real Gold Medals

The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were awarded in 1912.

The Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city's organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimeters thick and 60 millimeters in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold.

It's just spray painted.  And the inlaid jade is just cheap plastic.  All this beauty is accented by the ironic printing of "Made in the USA" along the outside edge.  Even the athletes at games are just actors.

In all seriousness, the Chinese games have the same requirements for the olympic medals that the previous olympics have had.  There must be at least 6 grams of 24 carat gold coating the medals.  The gold medals contain silver, but 92.5% of the medal must be valuable mineral.  Silver medals have to contain at least the same 92.5% of silver.  Have a little faith.  The athletes are the actual best in the world, and have worked very hard to become so.  Even cheap lead medals wouldn't diminish their accomplishments.
