Are those chain e-mails claiming that every person you forward it to a donation will be made to a worthy cause

I just got an e-mail supposedly from a Dr. who is forwarding a peom from a dieing girl and every person I sent it to the Red Cross will donate three cent to her treatment. Are these real?

How would anyone know how many were forwarded? It's not possible.

It is my understanding that at least some chain e-mails are an attempt by spammers to verify e-mail addresses.  I delete any that I get.

The only cause the money usually goes to is the sender, and that's never a worthy one.
