Most species of cicada spend the majority of their lifecycle underground for up to seventeen years. Once the  the female cicada emerges above ground, she mates, lays her eggs, and dies. The male cicada abdomen has two drum like sound chambers, which are used to try to attract a mate. A male cicada's sound can be heard from up to three miles away.
