  1. Some are legit, some are not. In any case, a lot of employers don't like to hire people who went to school online. So if you must go online, then at least try to find a school that has a great reputation for its brick and mortar (offline) programs. Stay away from any university (such as U of Phoenix) that is famous for being either online or for-profit. And ideally, try to find a program where your transcript and diploma are identical to those of the on-campus students.

For example, U of London offers a lot of programs online, and they are a strong university. However, their diploma and transcript will say that you went there as an external student.

Rensselaer Polytechnic, on the other hand, is also a very strong university with a lot of degrees online. However, your diploma and transcript is identical to those of their on-campus students. It won't say "online" or anything like that.

So good online bachelor's degree universities, with very solid reputations offline, include:

    - UMass Amherst

    - U Maryland

    - Penn State

    - Rensselaer Polytechnic

    - U Nebraska Lincoln

    - Worcester Polytechnic

    - Carnegie Mellon

    Hope this gets you started.

  2. Technically are legit, but they really don't help you.  Some of them aren't even accredited.

And they aren't worth as much as a degree from a real college.

    Edit:

    I agree with Roaring.

If it is a online university that is connected to a well known brick-and-motor university then you are safe.  An example, if Northwestern's Business college has an online degree for working professionals to earn their MBA, I feel that the degree will have some weight.  But even then one might need to meet at the university everyone once in a while.

  3. Some are. Some are not. Try Phoenix University or Thomas Edison State College. The costs are high, but those are two that I know of that are definitly legit.
