Question:

Are tinted motorcycle visors legal in the UK?

I've just fitted a sticky yellow/gold one behind my helmet's visor. I wouldn't even call it a tint -- you can't see my face through it at all. I live in England by the way. Is it legal? Will I get points/fined?

  1. Tinted Visors are NOT illegal, but must comply with the Con and Use regulations.

Helmet visors must not be tinted to the extent that there is less than 50% of AVLT and they must bear the BS 4110:1979 or ECE Regulation 22.05 markings.

Bear in mind though a lot of these tinted visors are produced for Non EU counties and for off road use so do not comply.

Check the markings on the tint.

  2. They are illegal, and if you are stopped you will have to ride on without a visor. Of course it is quite ok to wear black sunglasses under a clear visor. Silly old world isn't it?

  3. Your visor must not stop more than 50% Actual Visual Light Transmission. And if it is night it must be clear. Your description sounds like an iridium visor tint sheet which clouds the issue because it is like a one way mirror but it is the officer’s decision and if they want they can make you walk home. You must carry a clear visor at all times to replace the mirrored one for worse weather conditions and nighttime.

  4. no,not legal..bizzys will give you a warning if u use them...if your cought again its a £30 fine.

  5. i know this gives police officers chance to stop you and even give you a caution, if I was you I would remove it or you will regret it when, the traffic unit pull you over. especially at a time that you are late to an appointment. You can do what ever you went to the other parts of your helmet, also don't use blue cool lights or that will give the UK officers a chance to speak to you. don't get yourself unnecessary attention ;-)

    Live does suck at times.

  6. The Police are supposed to be more tolerant now....but they are still illegal ! (think your allowed a 15% tint though) If yours is a mirrored one but not very tinted then you should still be ok ! (you can drive around in a car with blacked out windows)

But you can wear dark sunglasses ? (most bike cops do.....strange law)

  7. NO !!!  I just looked it up for you.  Good luck !

  8. dont listen to the person above as he doesnt know what he is on about. Ive been riding motorbikes from the age of 16 and have always used tinted visors. Recently they made a new law to say they are not legal but police will not hassle you as its not a big priority for them.

  9. most are OK for daytime use if they are not to dark but you have to remove  it  at night you can not even ride with the visor open, if you want a tinted visor buy a helmet with an internal tinted visor like  a caberg

  10. Not only illegal but down right dangerous.  Have seen the photos of a rider entering a curve under a bridge tunnel with a tinted visor and the photos were not that good.  Someone had to identify that body and dental records were needed

If you must have a tint then get a lid that has a clear visor with another half visor as the tint.  The police use them and they work well.  The one made by Nolan is good but there are many on the market
