  1. No, they're not.  There are at least three separate types.  Not interchangeable.

  2. Pretty much yes. You can go to any hardware store and get the standard replacement  parts you need that will fit any toilet made in the last fifty years. You might occasionally have to modify a part or two but nothing that you can't figure out and do in five minutes or less.

I have rental properties and do maintenance work. It is not a difficult job just take your time, don't over tighten and make sure there are no leaks.

One warning, before you start the work make sure you can turn off the water to the toilet. Often the valve leading to the toilet is old and rarely used. Be gentle try not to break the valve when closing it and don't be surprised if it doesn't close right. You might have to shut off the water for the entire house so also locate the main shut off before you start.

Other than that it's an easy job, do it once or twice and you'll be a pro.

  3. Should be.

  4. If you mean globely then no (British are different). If you mean in America then yes.

  5. I can't answer in the sense of "Universal" globally, but certainly in the USA STANDARD is a general situation.

Beyond that, the internal hardware, as a DIY fix is likely the least expensive, easiest task to accomplish, in a home.

    Just my two "sense"
