  1. How did you claim tolls back when you had a company car?

  2. Depends on your own company's policy I think, but I would have said not - anyone who travels for us on company business can claim mileage and tolls on top

  3. It depends on the company policy whether they refund you separately, but from a tax perspective no they are not included in the authorised mileage rates. They are in addition..

    The Inland Revenue's approved mileage rates since 2002/03 are:

    First 10,000 business miles in the tax year

    * Cars and vans  40p

    * Motor cycles  24p

    * Bicycles 20p

    For each business mile above 10,000 business miles

    * Cars and vans  25p

    * Motor cycles  24p

    * Bicycles 20p

    If your company reimburses you less than these amounts, you can claim tax back on the difference through your tax return.

    In addition to these allowances, the tax man allows companies to make Passenger payments – cars and vans

    5p per passenger per business mile for carrying fellow employees in a car or van on journeys which are also work journeys for them. Only payments specifically for carrying passengers count and there is no relief if you receive less, or nothing at all. So you cant claim this via your tax return if the employer does not reimburse it.

    If your employer does not reimburse you for road tolls etc, then again, you can claim them as a tax deductable expense via your tax return

    If you haven't completed a tax return you've got five years from the 31 October following the end of the year concerned to get the relief. If you've previously completed a return it's five years from 31 January following the end of the year concerned. So use this or lose it!

  4. If you are driving a company car wheather or not it is a pool car, your specified car or your specified car with private use too, if you are paying for fuel and then claiming back your buisiness miles at £0.14/mile then the answer is no.

    If the vehicle, regardless of if you get a car allowance from your company, is your own and you use it for business use and claim £0.35 (I think)/mile, again tolls are not included in this.

    There is no need to use a toll road/bridge in this country, you can always take a longer route. Road tolls may be reimbursed to you by your employer along with parking tickets, food, accomodation, phone calls etc dependant on your employers policy.

    If they are trying to say that you cannot claim for a road toll separately to your milage because it is included in your milage payment, that is wrong. They are however not obliged to reimburse you for the road toll if it was not a pre-authorised expense.
