Are tow bars illegal?

I have heard that tow bars are illegal if not welded to the frame of the towing vehicle....is this correct?

Tow bars are not illegal whether welded or bolted onto the frame.      If obscurement of the plate is a difficulty,   simply remove or turn  when not in use.

no and they should not be welded to the frame of the towing vehicle unless it is part of the design of said vehicle. However you should check with your country or states regulations first

They are not illegal for being bolted on but many are illegal because when there is no trailer attached the ball hitch obscures the number plate.
