Are turkeys Turkish?

Okay. They are North American. I seem to remember that. But why do they TASTE so turkish, then?

The turkey is native to North America.

   When Europeans first encountered turkeys in the Americas, they incorrectly identified the birds as a type of fowl  known as a turkey-c**k, from its importation to Central Europe through Turkey.  The name of the country stuck as the name of the bird.

Turkey is a bird that in the old continents everybody thought it came from further east. The Brits thought it came from the other end of the European continent, Turkey that is, and the Turks thought it came from India. Turks called the bird "Hindi" which means from India or Indian. (not the American way)
