Question:

Are two moons going to appear on 27th August?

I received emails forwarded from my friends that said two moons will appear on 27th august at 12.30am. Is it true or is it junk emails trying to scare the h**l out of naive people? Are there any scientific explaination about this? If yes, please state.

Thanks!

  1. Yes. it is going to happen. The real moon and the one I am going to do in your face. Dumbsh!t.

  2. No because think of all the songs that would have to be changed, "Moons over Miami" or "Fly me to the Moons" It just wouldn't sound right.

  3. your friends are idiots. the emails are nonsense.

the only science involved is paranoid psychology.

  4. At last count, our planet had only one moon.

  5. hi, i heard this too! What it is , is that mars will be close enough to the earth to appear as bright/almost as large as the moon THROUGH A TELESCOPE. With the naked eye it will be around the size of venus, with a reddish hue.

It happened in 2003, same date, and there was an email circulating with a slight misprint that led people to believe that it would appear as large as our moon when we just look at the sky.

Looks like the email was then circulated again around the same time every year.. as thats the time of year when mars is closest to the earth, more or less, and its something interesting to read about..........

  6. I hope not, or my tide charts will be off on that day. When would I go fishing?

Seriously, if there was going to be another moon on that day, it would be close enough to be visible by now.

    .

  7. Nah, sombody was "funning" you, cause there is only one moon.  Count on it being there prehaps even during the day, but especially at night, when it can be seen better!

I repeat, No, there will not be another moon in the sky.  Now there may be a near pass by something we've sent into space, a telescope, etc., etc.

But not the moon!  There is only one and it will be there, whenever!

  8. Of course not.  Earth has one moon.  Where would it get another?  Are we going to borrow one from Jupiter?  Jupiter might object!!!  Maybe space aliens could move Mars that day to provide us with another moon.  Yes that must be the answer.  Pesky space aliens are always moving moons and planets around without asking permission.

  9. YES, one in the sky and other in ur dreams...

its just a stupid chain email...

  10. In 2003, on August 27th, Mars came about as close to the Earth as it gets.  And an accurate email said that Mars, in a 100x telescope, is the size of the Full Moon (without a telescope).  This is cool, because it can give you an expectation of what kind of detail you could see.  You could just look at the Moon.  And, Mars was very cool.  But the 2005 opposition was pretty cool too.

But the original email has been altered each year and sent out.  Now phrases like "Mars will be bigger than the full Moon", or "there will be two moons in the sky", and other nonsense has been added.  And, of course, the 2003 date has been replaced.

Rather than say "your friends are stupid to believe such nonsense", or such, i much prefer to use it as a talking point to instruct.  It's an opportunity for outreach, not something one needs to beat people over the head with. And we now get this opportunity every summer.

For example, the next Mars opposition is January 2010.  It won't be as good, mostly because Mars is farther from the Sun in January than it is in August.  So if that's where the Sun, the Earth and Mars line up, it's not as close.  But you'll still be able to see the polar cap in a 6 inch or 8 inch scope, and larger scopes will show more detail.

    Clear skies.

  12. Yes there will be, one will be in the sky and someone will drop their pants with their back turned to you.

  13. I don't think so its going 2 happen because the earth has only one moon.Your friends r joking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. Some guy got bored and started a chain email. Its nothing more than a hoax. Unless somehow another moon magically forms by next Wednesday...

  15. Cant comment

  16. It is not true.

    It is a hoax.

  17. Hi Jodeen,

Please tell your parents or guardians that you go to a really lousy school with a science program that sucks.  Ask them to do whatever they can to get you a decent education that includes a little knowledge about the world around you.

Don't be concerned about being naive.  That's a condition that education can cure.  Now if you can only get some.....

  18. Two moons aren't going to appear on August 27th. This comes from a hoax e-mail which circulates every year at this time. For more information: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/hsblog/2007/0...

  19. You are the victim of an email hoax.

This is an urban myth which began with an email which was sort of true in 2003, that Mars would be very close and bright. It also had a line in it which suggested that Mars, IN A TELESCOPE, would look as large as the Moon with the naked eye. Somewhere along the way, the "with a telescope" bit disappeared. August 2003 came and went, and many people had wonderful views of Mars through telescopes provided by amateur astronomers around the world.

Then the email resurfaced in 2004, when Mars was on the far side of the Sun. Then again in 2005, when Mars was in opposition in October, not August, and quite a bit smaller. Then again in 2006, when Mars was again on the far side of the Sun. Then again in 2007, when opposition was in December, and Mars smaller still. Now, you've been fooled by this fake email in 2008! Mars is again on the far side of the Sun.

When will people learn that astronomical events are predicted for a particular date, which has absolutely nothing to do with Earth years, and you can't just keep recycling the same prediction and changing the year? Everything on Mars happens in a 26 month cycle: August 2003, October 2005, December 2007, etc.

  20. how in the **** would two moons appear? do you not know what the solar system looks like?

  21. *laughing*

No. The Earth only has one moon!

And yes those are just junk e-mails trying to scare you!
