  1. I looked into this myself...  aside from joining the military it seems to me the one thing you really need to become a pilot is a very rich daddy with lots of friends at the country club who can fund you through getting your PPL.

    But i'm just bitter.

  2. Helper pretty much lays out the real solution.  I'ld becareful of aviaphag considering her 40 years experience requires the services of a school or instructor which she neither references or you can find by normal search engine.  I'd thought with 40 years she'd not needed an instructor.  But then I'm not current.

How real is your interest?  There's a school in Illinois called Langa Air that my son was looking into and by my research is probably the best in curriculum  and cost.

  3. The previous answerer is confused about the costs.  A Private Airman Certificate will cost you about $5,000 to $9,000 US depending on the sort of arrangements you can make.

The $30,000 investment includes the above plus the flight experience and training required to secure a Commercial Airman Certificate, Multi-engine, instrument, and instructor ratings.

These qualifications are required to begin a paying career as a pilot.  A "pilot's license" is actually called an Airman Certificate, even if you are a girl.

The best way to get started is to visit the nearest flight school, which you can find in the yellow pages.  Talk it over with the flight instructors, and take an introductory flight.  That will cost you $75 to $100 and will count as flight training toward your first certificate.  It will also give you a realistic sense of what it feels like to fly an airplane.

But act now, if you are interested.  These cost figures are rising from month to month, because of rising fuel costs.

Oh, and in my 40+ years of experience, I find that Uncle Jim Bob is often the best flight instructor anywhere around.  The FAA sets the standards, and flight instructors are required to do a good job.  And Jim Bob will have to charge you about the same as any flight school.

And FAA examiners are certified by the FAA to uniform standards.  Lazy Bones will not qualify, so forget that.  In fact, that person's comments are ignorant and offensive.

    Good luck.

^^ Whoever said that, it's bull. I am 17, I'm not in the military, my dad is not rich, he does not belong to a country club....I have a job, and I worked hard to fund my private pilot training. So don't think that just because someone flys, that they didn't have to bust their *** working for minimum wage, with one week's check paying for one flight.

    Thanks

  5. You take PILOT TRAINING at flight school.

There's specific course you need to take at school.  It helps to speak English as it is the international language spoke at all airports when landing and taking off.

It isn't all that expensive to become a private pilot.  Somewhere from $4000 to $8000 (a cost of a motorcycle - another hobby).  And if you want to be commercial pilot it is the cost of what other would pay for college.

    Good Luck...

  6. Contact your nearest flying school/club.

You will need to obtain your Private then your Commercial Pilots Licences with the requisite instrument ratings. Then you will either look around for a suitable job, or maybe you will find a placement in the regional feeder lines.

The life of a pilot is tough but very rewarding, both financially and otherwise.

  7. Where do you live?  Do a bit of searching to find out what flight schools exist in your area, and request info. from them.  There are many ways to go, and many different types of pilots.  Lifestyles can vary greatly.  What are you after?

Oh, and to get your pilot licence, it could actually cost up to $30,000, not just $8,000.  If you go to Uncle JimBob's Flight Strip and get Lazy Bones Freddy to do your exam, you might get away with $8,000.  You're going to have to build up your hours at some point anyway, so might as well learn the basics properly and put in more, rather than less, hours into your PPL.
