The Food Standards Agency wants eating establishments to display the calories on the menu for each meal they serve. They said on Radio today that if not taken up voluntarily - then they would have to consider legislation. The FSA has identified that men consume 25% of their calories outside the home, and women 20% ,and that eating out is becoming more frequent.

Calculating the number of calories for individual meals is quite complex. For privately owned restaurants, bistros and cafes this is a daunting task, and reduces their flexibility to offer seasonal produce. It would increase their costs significantly.

For the national chains who serve the same thing all year round, from a multitude of sites ( like McDonalds, Beefeaters etc) it's a simple matter done at head office and printed on the national menu. For the local Free House pub they would have to restrict their menu to the same meals - never taking advantage of opportune ingredients.

  1. Great idea.

Anyone who doesn't care about the calories can just ignore the label but, for those of us who do, it will be a great help to decide what is good and bad for us!

  2. I wasn't aware of this ... but I'm not surprised. This government want to control every aspect of our lives. Looking at the state of some of these fat, bloated cretins maybe they should trial the idea in Westminster first.

  3. They should so do it!!, let people know what they are

    consuming.

  4. Yes they were talking about it on radio 2 last month
