You can get a book by Alan Oken called Complete Astrology. it shows the interpretation, the elements, modes, aspects and even transits and progressions. It has about 700 pages and will be a good starter for you. Their is also Alan Leo " The Key to your nativity". I anm sure that you can find others but these are ery complete and have like 3 books combined into one.

edit... this book also gives a test after each chapter to see if you grasp what you have learnt thus far.

If you are a beginner and really want to understand Astrology, I can suggest a book used to teach Astrology.  It is a workbook as well, giving you tests after each chapter, so you can tell if there are areas you need to go back and review.  I have had great success in teaching Astrology to friends and family members by using this primer/workbook.  

It is:  "Astrology for Yourself: How to Understand And Interpret Your Own Birth Chart" by Douglas Bloch and Demetra George.  If you have trouble finding it, you can find it at amazon.com for a reasonable price $12-$14...make sure you get the most recent 2006 edition, it has a blue cover......
