  1. I was over 35 and had gestational diabetes with both pregnancies.  I had an ultrasound 1 - 2 times a month up until 32 weeks, then had them weekly until the births.  I delivered two perfectly healthy boys.

  2. Everything has it's risk , including taking medicines, even during delivery and caeserian sections. But it's the benefits usually outweigh the risks and that's why it's used.

Ultrasound scans have been a useful screening tool that has helped doctors and parents know any congenital anomalies in a child during pregnancy and helped in education of the parents involved and necessary early treatment and prevention.

  3. I doubt it's true...why would doctors use it all the time if it was harmful to the baby?

  4. At present, the jury is still out on the safety of ultrasound.

There is no compelling evidence that it is dangerous, but there is also no proof that it is 100% safe. (Some studies have found potential risks.)

Therefore ... the view of the OB/GYN professional board is that ultrasound is safe enough to use where there is a clear medical need -- to investigate complications in the pregnancy.  But there is no benefit to 'routine' scans (including the 20 week scans that most women get), and women should not get unnecessary scans for things like s*x determination or 'to bond with the baby.'

(Ultrasound does not use radiation, so is very different from an x-ray.  However, it is possible that the soundwaves may cause subtle harm to the developing baby.)

  5. nope, ultrasound is not harmful to the baby.  it does not use radiation (x-rays)...rather, sound waves to detect what is going on inside the uterus.

EDIT - NOPE, THEY ARE NOT USING X-RAYS TO DETECT THE s*x OF THE BABY.  THE SOUND WAVES HIT THE FLUID AND SOLIDS DIFFERENTLY AND CREATE "SHADOWS" WHICH IS BASICALLY WHAT YOU SEE WHEN THEY SHOW YOU THE PICTURES.

matty m sounds really stupid.  sorry to be mean, but his comment is hilarious.  the baby's s*x is determined at conception, so no amount of ultrasound is going to make a boy or a girl.  how stupid.

  6. Ultrasound is very safe for both mother and baby and there has been NO instance of harm to a child

  7. No, absolutely not. Ultrasounds are very safe and noninvasive. If ultrasounds, which are routinely done multiple times during a pregnancy, were unsafe they would not be used as much as they are. Healthcare professionals are not in the business of being sued.

  8. it is not true...it is safe

  9. Ultrasounds are perfectly safe for baby.

  10. If the ultrasound is used too early in pregnancy it can harm the baby, causing miscarriage. Repeated ultrasounds too early in the pregnancy can harm the baby, causing miscarriage. Ultrasound operators have a higher incidence of spontaneous abortions.

It is ironic that women who have had previous miscarriages or who have conceived after infertility treatment, often have additional and repeated ultrasound examinations in order to "reassure" them that their baby is developing properly. Would they consent if they knew of possible increased risks of miscarriage or premature labor or premature birth?

An ultrasound cannot determine accurately the s*x of your baby, your due date, the weight or size of your baby. Hospitals have been sued for misdiagnosing the s*x of a baby. Many of the "diagnosis" from the ultrasound turn out to be wrong, leading the parents to worry needlessly about something that mysteriously appears and disappears on the scans, cysts, placenta previa, etc.

Before consenting to any ultrasound a woman should be told what the purpose of the scan is and decide from there. Take a look at www.aims.org.uk for current research on the safety of ultrasounds and decide for yourself.

  11. I have heard and noticed more baby's well mothers that get ultrasounds the more change it will become a boy.
