To form a concept, one mentally isolates a group of concretes (of distinct perceptual units), on the basis of observed similarities which distinguish them from all other known concretes (similarity is “the relationship between two or more existents which possess the same characteristic(s), but in different measure or degree”); then, by a process of omitting the particular measurements of these concretes, one integrates them into a single new mental unit: the concept, which subsumes all concretes of this kind (a potentially unlimited number). The integration is completed and retained by the selection of a perceptual symbol (a word) to designate it. “A concept is a mental integration of two or more units possessing the same distinguishing characteristic(s), with their particular measurements omitted.”

He observes that their shapes vary, but have one characteristic in common: a flat, level surface and support(s). He forms the concept “table” by retaining that characteristic and omitting all particular measurements, not only the measurements of the shape, but of all the other characteristics of tables (many of which he is not aware of at the time)."

We, along with yaoui, could simply continue to describe how it is that humanity accesses categories and concepts, but this does not explain universality.  If we were all just a bunch of singular minds engaged in building our own selfish 'conceptual habitrail', then yoai would be doing a fine job of prosaically describing that occurence.

    Universals, though, are something undeniably different from that.  How is it that all of mankind develops a system of universals which is uncannily similar around the entire world and throughout time?  Discovery is the first thing that comes to mind.

I would say in not so many words, yes, universals are discovered, but now, you don't see them come out of hiding, until tested, retested and post-tested.  Universals like the size of the universe, the Hubble Constant, the energy/mass ratio  of a proton, these are a few of the things that don't come across unless you need to reference them in a larger sense of "Why is it this way, not that, is it simply because the only constant universals, or universal constants, do not change except in theory, to fulfill this world, this universe, as the only way we would exist.  Change a timer, loosen a s***w, add or change fuel, or change just one of these, and we would be torn apart imploding with huge forces.  Peachy/dreamer/creamer
