  1. Yes, it is partly true. Universities throughout the country are assigned grades by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, India. Your mom's colleague is also partly wrong. Universities are graded on a 4-point scale and based on the Cumulative Grade Point Average, grades are assigned to universities like A++, A+, A, B++, B+, B etc; not Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3 and so forth. You can learn more about the grading system followed here.

    Read page 16 in particular.

A CGPA of 3.01 to 4.00 fetches you an 'A'(Very Good) grade, 2.01 - 3.00 a 'B'(Good), and 1.51 - 2.00 gets you a 'C'(satisfactory) grade. Below that, it is a 'D'(unsatisfactory performance) and the university is not graded/accredited(over here in India, accreditation means 'getting accredited with a grade', nothing more)

But it isn't true that the universities with the highest grades are harder to get into. Most universities have high grades, since the grading isn't relative. You can find out the grade of a university by selecting the state it is located in from the drop-down menu.

    Hope it helped !

Law and Theatre Studies.. Does the University of Mumbai appeal to you?
