  1. Im the opposite of Rick m,i had all the shots, they are free in the Uk,i took the advice off the WHO and did not bother with malaria pills, there is no malaria in the major cities and costal regions of Vietnam. If i where you i would deffinately have the shots.

  2. Vaccinations are not necessary, but it is a d**n good idea to get certain vaccines before you go. I made friends with a few Australian medical students in Hanoi, and they gave me some straight advice on this.

Hepatitis is second only to motorbike accidents in hospital admissions and deaths in Hanoi. In other words, what you eat in Vietnam could kill you if you aren't ran over by a motorbike first (I'm being sarcastic). Our American bodies are not accustomed to the harsh sanitary conditions in Vietnam, and it's better to get some shots to keep you from getting sick than wishing you did after you have gotten sick there.

Flu, hepatitis and tetanus vaccinations will cover the brunt of what could get you sick in the cities. Malaria treatments is not a bad idea if you are planning to wander into the country or are going during the rainy season. Make sure you follow your physician's instructions on taking the malaria pills, because they will be useless of you s***w it up.

Good luck to you and have fun!

  3. No, I live in the sticks and have never gotten a vaccination. A malaria shot or pills keeps you from donating blood for three years. Get a mosquito net to sleep under and use a repellent.

You shouldn't have ANY problem in Saigon, but don't take chances.

    Enjoy your trip!

  4. I would contact my physician or clinic and find out what is needed to be up to date for that area of the world.  Then I would follow their instructions.  I do know you should take a malaria prevention pill. Do what you think is right for you.  We are lucky this year and up to date, we only have to take the malaria pill once a week.  cheers
