  1. Yes. Even if they are made of plastic they are better. Leather shoes are filled with chemicals so they don't fall apart and the animals they raise to make them have a waaaaaaaaaay bigger impact on the earth than the synthetic materials made by man.

  2. Depends on what they are made from: if they are made of cotton, hemp, rubber, or other plant-based fibers, then maybe.

If they are made of petroleum products, like plastic, probably not.  Also, other products are produced from chemical reactions which require lots of water for procuction facilities (e.g. nylon).  Not so eco friendly.

So, eco-friendly and animal friendly counts.  What about human friendly?  Child laborers, slave laborers (don't kid yourself that slaves don't exist).  How can anyone be certain that all of these conditions are met without making their own shoes?

Bravo for you to look for ways to improve life on this planet.   You sound like a sharing, caring individual.  Thank you!

  3. I suppose they can be, if they are made mainly of fabrics like canvas and natural rubber.

  4. yes they are good on the economy

  5. Yes, mine always!

  6. the answer is... maybe

  7. Plastic shoes are certainly not environmentally friendly, but most leather shoes contain plastic products anyhow.

It is best to avoid shoes made from synthetic materials, although it is next to impossible these days. Some "vegan" and/or "eco-shoes" can be extremely pricey, and not necessarily practical for those of us on a budget.

I usually buy canvas shoes-- like Chuck Taylors, Vans, or the cheap canvas shoes at wal-mart.

Some times you can find bargains on eco-friendly footwear if you shop around. I have a pair of Simple hemp flip flops with rubber soles which I got on clearance for $20--I love those. I also got a pair of vegan birkenstocks from Ross for $25, I love those as well.

These days, I am trying not to buy much. I think consumerism is also a big problem and I think that consuming less is the key to helping the planet.

In the end, you have to look at EVERYTHING when considering which products to buy. Plastics are harmful to animals too, because high levels of toxins and pollution are harmful to all animals on this earth.

It's kind of hard to avoid shoes that contain plastics. If you live in the city you will have a hard time walking around in shoes that are only hemp. Simple is making some really cool shoes that are hemp with rubber soles. I suppose this will be the next step for me.
