Question:

Are veggie burgers vegan? any recipes?

e.g. if a restaurant has a veggie burger on the menu (and it doesn't contain cheese) is it likely that its vegan?

Also, does anyone have any great veggie burger recipes. I used to buy veggie patties until my mum claimed that I eat too many processed foods.

  1. Hi!

    I reckon it's always better to confirm if the food is vegan.

    These burgers are delicious topped with tomato slices, served with brown rice alongside a Cucumber Peanut Salad, or eaten as a sandwich on a bun slathered with vegan mayo or avocado dressing.

    1/4 cup dried hijiki seaweed

    1 cup peeled and grated carrots

    2 Tbsp. pressed garlic

    2 tsp. grated fresh ginger root

    1 Tbsp. vegetable oil

    24 oz. firm tofu, pressed*

    1/2 cup minced scallions

    1/4 cup sesame seeds

    1/4 cup light miso (or more, to taste)

    1 tsp. dark sesame oil

    • Rinse the hijiki in a sieve or strainer and place in a bowl with warm water. Set aside, covered, to soak for 20 to 30 minutes.

    • Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Generously oil a baking sheet or coat with cooking spray.

    • Sauté the carrots, garlic, and ginger in the oil for about 5 minutes, until the carrots are limp. In a bowl, mash or crumble the tofu. Add the cooked carrots and the scallions, sesame seeds, miso, and sesame oil and stir well. Drain and chop the soaked hijiki and stir into the mix.

    • Use about 1/2 cup per burger and form into patties. Place on the baking sheet and bake until firm and golden, about 30 to 40 minutes.

    *Put the cakes of tofu between two plates, and place a heavy can or book on top. Press for about 15 min, and then drain off the excess liquid.

    Makes 4 to 6 servings

  2. I have found more non vegan than vegan veggie burgers in restaurants.. you do need to ask, or research it online before you go...

    Also check if the bun is vegan....

  3. I doubt it, its common to use egg whites as a binder in veggie burgers.

    there are plenty of vegan burgers around though, but not those marketed as "vegetarian" in a resturant.

    For vegan ones you have to pop into your local healthfood shop.

  4. It is best to ask at the restaurant befrore u place the order. That would be the safest bet.

  5. Be sure to ask since the veggie burgers we use to serve definitely had cheese in them.  

    Instead of veggie burgers, you can always cook a portabella cap in some Italian dressing in a pan.(about a tablespoon or two)
