  1. Safe to a degree and as for blowing up, no but at the same time as stated above you should listen to your mother, get a hardtop and you will be a happier person.

  2. Any car is only as safe as the driver. If you are properly belted in and driving defensively, any car can be safe and fun to drive. they do not allow unsafe vehicles on the road--by design they are safe--the driver has ultimate control.

  3. Listen to your mother - she doesn't know anything about physics or cars, but you'll both be happier if you listen to her.

  4. do what youd like, the VWs of today share many of the same parts with AUdi because they are owned by the same company, and Audi has some of the safest cars in the world, so you could tell you mom that..

  5. That year of VW has the engine in front. The trunk (boot) is in the back.

VWs were rear engine until 1975 in the US.

    They were pretty safe, I owned 2, a 56 bug & a 65 Bus.

  6. Well, the engine is in the front of the Beetle, and the Beetle isn't that safe, but safe enough to protect you. The Mini Cooper is safer. For overall safety, Saab is the best brand.

  7. I personally wouldn't touch that car with a barge pole. The amount of protection if you roll it is minuscule, almost no protection. I am told by friends that it's like driving around in a gold fish bowl with everyone gawping at you. If you are rear ended, in actual fact, the engine wouldn't probably blow up, front or rear accident tests must have given the car a minimum safety standard and you will find this on the What Car web site.
