Question:

Are walkie talkies my only option on a cruise ship?

Is there any other wireless communication I can use, because I figure the radios will have a lot of static. Or does anyone have any other good ideas other than setting times (before we separate) to meet up?

And if walkie talkies ARE my only option, what are good brands/models?

  1. Well it depends on the budget...

Motorolla has a large line of one way / two way radios, with an excellent quality, another brand is ICOM,(the chepest are the amateur line :) )

But the more expensive and secure are the satellite phones, like orbcom lines

    Regards

  2. if you have a nice phone that gets wifi. You can connect to the ships wifi network :)

and text message each other.... Or you guys could just get a airhorn.  and blow it like twice if you want him to meet you really quick at certain destination.... other than that have fun on your cruise.

Walki talkis are a pain in the A.  Just set up a time and place or tell him where you will be. Like if your going to be out by the pool. in eating ... etc

  3. We have purchased less expensive radios but always tried to get the 10 mile range radio they work best if they are from the same package.  We have lost two on two different ships and so the odd ball radio is not as clear but they are ok.  We have also called the room and left message on voice mail. I saw a lot of people on the freedom using their cell phones on the ship, they even work in the room but better call your provider first and see what the charges will be.  I am sure some of those people are still paying their bill off.

  4. This shouldn't be a problem for you as most of the bigger cruise liners these days are equipped with sophisticated ship to shore radio or phone systems.

  5. If you do use walkie-talkies, please be considerate of the other cruisers.  I've heard/seen many people using these and shouting away into them.

  6. my hubby and I use them but we bought really good ones at best buy. They were like a 100 a peice..but they work.

They have cheapies for 40 but we tried them on our 1st cruise and unless I was at the pool in the open air and he was on the balcony at the room that was they only way they worked well. Plus,..you get everyone using same frequencies..ugggggggggg!

The cheap walkie talkies don't make it through the steel in the boat. Get the best ones you can as they work well..and trust me,..there is a lack of clocks..even in the rooms...so bring watches for each child,  and an alarm clock if you want to sync times.

    Have a fab time !!   :~]]]
