Question:

Are water repellents on sleeping bags safe?

I've been looking for a sleeping bag that is both healthy and better for the environment - so I've been trying to find organic cotton or hemp (I'd buy used but most contain vinyl!). So far no luck. I did find a recycled content sleeping bag, but it says it is "water repellent." Does anyone know what they use to make them water repellent, and is it a safe product both for me and for the environment? If you perhaps know the name of the product/chemical most commonly used so I could look it up, that would be helpful. Better yet, if you know where I can buy natural or organic camp gear I'd be very grateful!
