The article you cited was slightly creative with its reasoning.

No one would deny that the US in a serious financial bind largely of its own making. But there is an actual rock bottom that has to be reached first, before radical change can happen.

Much can be done, but those that have the power to make a big difference don't understand the problem even now at this late hour. Amazingly they propose printing yet more money to help out those in need.

That is a bit like pouring gasoline on a fire to put it out.
