Are we allowed to reference the Extended Essay itself in our writing?

As in, can I write "this work will examine..." etc?

honestly, you shouldn't do that, because as a high schooler, I have been told countless times to never summarize what you will be writing about- it is likely because it may lead you to using pronouns  in a sentence such as "I will be showing you how..." or such. Maybe ask a teacher, if you find it extremely important to include that sentence, otherwise, i'd completely avoid it, so you do not get point deductions, and can get a good grade.
