In the US, you will have to have a specialty license and generally have your proposed enclosure approved by your state game office.  

The animals themselves do NOT make good pets.

It depends on where you live. I live in Texas, and caimans are legal, although most cities have ordinances against them. But where they are legal here, no permit is required, so I don't know where one answerer is coming up with a permit is required and an inspection must be done. Not true everywhere. I also know alligators are legal in Pennsylvania. Check your state and local laws.

Most places you can have them but there are permits you have to have. Having alligators and caimans as pets is not a good idea. They are amazing animals but also very dangerous. It takes a lot of work to take care of them, a lot of food. You will need to find a vet that has worked with them before which can be very hard. These are not animals that you can go and pet and play with. They can also get very large which can be a problem. They also live for a pretty long time so it is a long commitment. Plus do you have the training and means to transport it if it need to go to the vet and the vet can't come to you. They are amazing and very dangerous and do not make good pets.

All depends where you live if it is in the uk they are banned under the dangerous animal act but i think some parts of the usa allow you to keep them might be worth moving if you really want one.

if you live in the UK u have to have a liscense for them which can be quite difficult to get you will also need about £4000 for every thing like the set up aswell
