I have a brother ..we dont have the same mum but we have the same dad ..does this still mean that we are closely blood related and may share some of the same features? sounds silly but i once got told that if you have the same mum and dont have the same dad you are closer than the other way around.

  1. Yes  of course  you both share  the same/equal amount  of chromosome as each other.

Any of  your parents have to be the same as it will stiill make you blood  relatives no matter what.

This makes you legally half brother and sister x

  2. You have equally the same amount of DNA from your father as your brother does.

  3. You are half brother and sister and share your dads DNA

  4. Yes, you will share some of the same features and you are very closely related.

  5. Both your brother and you recieved half of your DNA from your father.  That doesn't mean your DNA from your father is identical to your brother's DNA from your father, but it doesn't make you less related to your brother than if you had the same mother and different fathers.  Some cultural things pass down the maternal line (from mother to children but not necessarily from father to children), but genetically or biologically speaking you are just as related to each other as any half-siblings.  I have three half-siblings myself and we all share some features.  Some people have even asked if we are twins.

  6. He is your half-sibling (half siblings share only one parent)- your level of genetic relationship is between that of full siblings and first cousins. You both share things in common with your dad but not your mum as you both have different mothers.

  7. My Half sister and i have the same mother and NOT the same father. I have 99.999% of my fathers DNA and she has 99.999% of her fathers dna. Both she and i have just ONE dna strand each belonging to our biological mother 00.001% (thank goodness) Obviously she and i look nothing alike and we have totatally different personalities too. We don't have anything in common at all. My other sister who does share the same dad as me also has the same high percentage of our Dads DNA as i do so we look alike, like the same things, music, food etc and get along really well. The only way to know is to have a DNA test like we did. The results i give here are from the DNA report and copy of the 'band images' we both have. Being siblings does NOT mean that you each have the same amount of DNA from your shared parent.

  8. There are some inheritance differences, but they are minor:

You received 1/2 of your nuclear genome from your dad as did your brother, so you are closely related. Approximately 25% of your nuclear genome is identical to your brother's. (I can explain the 25% if you want).

One difference is the X and Y chromosome-Your brother inherited a Y chromosome from your dad, and an X from his mom. You (I assume you are female) inherited an X chromosome from each parent.

Your mitochondria (organelles in cells that are involved in energy production) have their own genomes (meaning they carry their own genes). Mitochondria are inherited from the mother only. So, since your brother and you have different mothers, you both have different mitochondrial genomes. This is likely why someone told you that you are more closely if you have the same mother.

The X chromosome and mitochondria together account for some differences, but you are still closely related.

  9. Yup and he is your half brother because you have equal amounts of chromosomes from your dad and the other half you get from your moms.
