Otherwise we would go along living by our selves and dying eventually? Or is the desire to have a companion in life innate?

  1. what Lynne said.

  2. I think its both conditioning and innate.  Parents gives us the idea that we need to fall in love and get married, but its also the feeling that we have that we don't want to be alone and have the need to find someone to shar our lives with.  This innate feeling is also the reason why people like to hang out with their friends rather than being alone all the time.

  3. It's socialized. Most of the people who answered here have been socialized to believe that it's innate, and to believe that anyone without a companion is defective or unhappy.

  4. I think that human beings, like the higher primates, are social animals.  We enjoy the companionship of others and in some ways have a basic "need" for it.  I believe there is some innate quality to humans that leads us to the search for a companion.

  5. I think it's innate.  No one wants to be alone forever.

  6. I think it's innate! we have to love in order to be happy! we can't live alone. most people choose marriage; while others choose a life of service for God (like Mother Theresa) or ...etc. it all depends on the person--but without loving and making somebody else happy, we can't be happy either!

  7. I think it's innate, but not universal.  There are lots of people who prefer to be loners. I am definitely not one of them.

  8. I think we are conditioned, but I think most people have the desire to have a companion. Everyone has the desire to be loved and supported.

  9. i think its innate.

but today..its sort of a left over from our beginnings.

  10. it sure seems that way, movies, the media, our friends and family, many people even push other people into dating or seeing people they don't even like !

  11. I think we all want someone to love us and to love
