This mostly comes from the fact that this is when the Mayan calender ends in the measurement of time and when they believe the world would end

While this cannot be proven, it cannot also be disproved, so one or the other has to happen.

The non-world-ending seems to be the most likely outcome.

The mayan calendar ends in the yar 2012 but there is no doomsday legend going along with it...The mayan calender is a 5000 year calendar that resets.

It's mere speculation.  It could happen, but for now they don't know for sure.  In addition, perhaps by the time 2012 rolls around, scientists may have gotten armageddon on us and figured out a way to destroy the asteroid that will destroy the earth.  You never know. :)

Well, look at it like this.... say, you get into a fight. You've got the upper hand. You kick the man in the head once. He's hurt. You kick him in the gut once. Again. Again. Again. His pain is a little more with each kick. You're damaging his internal organs. You kick him in the ribs and break a few. You kick him in the head ten times and fracture his skull in a few places. You just keep kicking and punching until he's finally dead.

People are doing this to the planet. It is slowly, but surely and steadily, being destroyed. I am so far from being an environmentalist; don't thihnk I'm a tree-hugger, I am truly not. BUT all the same, this Earth is starting to rot. At least, on its surface.

Additionally, our relations are shaky enough with some nations that all of us are under threat of nuclear attack. And many more places are under threat of that from the US, right? Right. And any time one nation becomes hostile and attacks, plenty of others will follow suit.

So, whether we're all or partially destroyed by weather, pollutants, chemicals, or nuclear weapons, it's starting to look more and more likely that most of us are going to live to see some pretty bad S**t. I'm 28 and if I live even to be 78, that's FIFTY years. Think about how bad things are right now....

I don't consider myself a pessimist, but anyone who thinks its going to get better is idiotically idealistic. People will always pollute. The holes in the ozone will grow larger. Weather will get worse. World relations are likely to get worse, rather than better, particularly with the rise in fuel and energy costs.

I think the US is going to throw the first strikes. American refuse to live without gas and other resources. Then, someone's going to fight back in a very big and nasty way.... let's say, Iran or China. And there will be a lot, A LOT, of lives lost before the climax.

No one really knows what's going to happen. And I definitely don't think anyone can predict the end of the world with an actual date, but I do think things are getting worse and what I just wrote, was my own personal prediction.
