Are we on the verge of another World War?

With Russia's recite invasion of Georgia, it leaves me to speculate wither or not this could be the beginning of another world war. From the reports on the news, it seems that Georgia has asked for our help from the Russian advancing forces. What is going to happen if America does get involed in this conflict? With most of our military fighting the war in Iraq and being spread thin as it is, do you think that the draft will go into effect to aid the Georgians

  1. No we aren't. UNLESS Nato decides to take sides with Georgia then yes we could possibly be.

  2. the world may fight but i sure as h**l am not, there is plenty of space for me to hide in this world (^.-)

  3. If the US intervenes militarily, it can.

If the US sends in troops, I'd be like if Russia sent in troops to protect the L.A. Rodney King rioters. How do you think the US would have reacted to THAT? It's not the best analogy, but that's how it would feel to the Russian government.

If the US intervened, I think the conflict would eventually escalate into a strategic nuclear exchange (WWIII) after many Russian and American soldiers die fighting each other. Russia still has 2,000+ nuclear weapons aimed at the US. They do not have the ability to project conventional power, so a strategic nuclear response will be one of their few options.

That would suck, bad. Start stockpiling penicillin, water and ammo, people!

All that being said, we are spread too thin right now to get involved.  The Georgian president started this invasion without consulting us and probably expected our support, which he is not getting so far.  We will stay out of it.

  4. depends on NATO and the U.N. otherwise i dont think the US will help Georgia

  5. Nope. Also, we do not have "most of our military fighting the war in Iraq and being spread thin as it is"... there are about 1.5 million US Troops, Active Duty alone... and only 150k or so in Iraq... quit listening to the dope smoking naysayers... no matter how many bad mouth the US, it doesn't make it true.

  6. It's not looking good.  This gives Bush an excuse to invade Iran, which he's been posturing with for a while now.  Witnessing the beginnings of WW3

  7. no we are not

but georgia tried to join NATO earlier this year and if they would have let georgia in then this attack on georgia could have sparked a russia vs NATO conflict

  8. A draft would be a disaster. I don't think there is much any of the Western countries can do. I know the Georgians are really looking for help, but I am afraid for them, that their call will go unanswered.

  9. First of all to set the facts straight, it was Georgia that started the whole thing under the instructions of American military who were "assisting" in the training of local Georgian military, hoping for some reason that Russia would not take arms to protect Russian citizens..

The same thing happened 30 years ago and no world war started. At that time it was CIA incited for the exact same reasons having to do with the Russian ability to deploy forces on Georgian coasts and cheaper and shorter route for gas pipelines

As for US help, as it was in the past it will probably limit itself to a few words on World Conventions and such and maybe a few harsh words on American and International version of CNN.

I wouldn't worry too much about this incident.

An attack on Iran is far more likely to cause a world war
