Are we overfishing our oceans? Ref. Nat'l Geog. Channel?

Sockeye salmon in Alaska.

Fishermen are using hudge boats (for long runs) with extraordinary nets and staying out 24 hours a day.

If this keeps up, they'll go semi-extinct.

  1. Absolutely!  I live south of there and the question used to be, "How many fish would you like me to catch for dinner tonight?"  Now I haven't caught a decent sized salmon in 3 years!  I've watched the fish vanish in my lifetime and so many fish boats and charters go out of business.

  2. 100% yes. You don't need to have any doubts about that.

Japanese boats fish out some hundreds of whales every year for supposedely research.

The boats stay out longer, go deeper every year. They even scrape the bottom of the ocean to catch the fishes which live near the bottom.

  3. You seem  to have answered your own question.  But it's not just salmon.  We're pulling more of many species out of the sea than can be sustained.  And, via pollution and global warming, disrupting the food chain in other ways.

  4. this is happening all over the world. in china, shark fin soup is very popular and has led to the slaughtering of millions and millions of sharks per year.

  5. To give you an idea of how silly we can be.

Gemfish used to be fished heavily until they started to become scarce. The powers that be decided to limit the amount of gemfish that fisherman could catch so that the fish could be sustainably fished.

To allow the fisherman to make a living they said that there are huge schools of orange roughy (sold as sea perch) you can fish them. They are a deep sea fish.

Fishermen pulled them out by the thousands of tonnes and then someone thought we know nothing about them. A study ensued and found out that they grow very slowly and take up to 40 yrs to mature. Needless to say that the stocks have been decimated and any new fish born are going to take 40yrs before they can breed. It will take centuries for them to recover; if they ever do.

  6. overfishing is such a mild expression

    raping ,exhausting ,demollishing ,destroying

,fishing grounds and depleting the oceans of all life with huge drag nets that scoop up everything in the water is more correct.
