Question:

Are we really going to see PAVLIK fight MAYORGA this fall?

It's been widely reported recently that after Kelly Pavlik dispatches mandatory challenger Gary Lockett in June, that Bob Arum is looking for Pavlik to fight either Arthur Abraham or Ricardo Mayorga. Abraham won't be available to fight Pavlik until early '09. . .which leaves the Nicaraguan power-puncher.

What do you think THIS fight would do for the sport? Would it be a blowout, or does Mayorga possibly have something for Pavlik? (Remember his recent win over Fernando Vargas)

  1. Well, Mayorga is well known from his surprising victory over Vernon Forrest and the rematch. I think his name alone would make for a draw of interest to boxing fans, if he and Pavlik were to step in the ring.

Though seeing what Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya's power did to Ricardo Mayorga, I can only imagine what Kelly Pavlik's jab would do to Mayorga before getting caught with Pavlik's right. Mayorga's recent climb above welterweight hasn't been too wonderful for him and I don't see it changing against a hitter like Pavlik.

  2. I highly doubt the fight will even take place. Cotto is supposed to fight   Mayorga in July and im sure will knock him out , if the fight with cotto happens , I doubt the fight with pavlik could happen after the beating mayorga recieves from cotto. Assuming Pavlik still fights mayorga regardless to weather mayorga takes on cotto first or not either way Mayorga is gonna get beat badly. I cant really give Mayorga any credit for beating Vargas though i do like Vargas a lot he was/is a shot fighter Vargas. After his brutal beatings from De la hoya and Trinidad , Vargas was just never the same fighter again he was damaged goods.  It was sad really (vargas) but gotta give Vargas Credit for fighting everyone right away. Far as Pavlik goes he will destroy Mayorga if they fought and I really hope that fight doesnt happen , Mayorga doesnt even deserve the honor to fight Pavlik or Cotto for their belts. The time to beat Mayorga for  a name on a fighter's resume has long since passed.

  3. Ricardo Mayorga's name has been popping up as a possible opponent for everyone ranging from Miguel Cotto at 147 to Kelly Pavlik at 160.  The reason why he is in demand so much is simple- he is a very beatable guy that looks good on your record after you beat him.  Not to mention that he always heats things up at the press conference, so he gets people talking about his fights.  Yes, he did beat Fernando Vargas, but Vargas looked like a tub of lard in that fight and I've never seen him look so bad.  I give Mayorga credit for beating him because everyone said that he would get knocked out in that fight like he did with De La Hoya, but the fact of the matter is that he won a decision against an out-of-shape former prizefighter.  His Vernon Forrest days are long gone, and remember that Forrest was suffering from severe injuries at the time.  I still give him credit for beating Forrest at a time when Vernon was considered one of the best fighters in the world though.  If Mayorga faces Pavlik he will get knocked out easily.  If Mayorga could not knock out Vargas, then there is no way that he could knock out Pavlik, and he does not have the boxing ability to outpoint him.  Remember that Felix Trinidad, and Oscar De La Hoya knocked him out, and Pavlik is bigger and stronger than both of those guys- put 2 and 2 together and what you get is an early round knockout at the hands of "The Ghost."  I would much rather see Pavlik face a top contender such as Arthur Abraham or even Randy Griffin, but as you said, those matchups may come later.  At least with Mayorga, Pavlik will get exposure, an easy win, and a good payday

  4. IT'S ALL GOOD.  LET'S GO FISHIN
