I know very little about genealogy, so heres the scenario: My first cousin "Andrew" got married last week, am I related to her (if so what are we). More importantly, would I be related to her first cousins at all?

  1. Your cousin's wife would only be related to you if you share a common ancestor back down the line.  Also the children of your first cousins are not your second cousins but your first cousins once removed.

  2. Oddly, this question is more diabolical than you suppose. You might be, or your might not be.

First cousin marriages were common in the old days; second cousin marriages lasted longer. We're all from the same animal at one time long ago...

I've seen a lot of cross-breeding in my research; it's difficult when you find out from a computer generated kinship report that you are also your first cousin's 6th and 9th cousin, and worse when it spits out that you're also your mother's 6th and 9th cousin once removed. We genealogy people don't talk about that much, but it's very common.

To find the real answer, just start with your parents, and grandparents, and trace them back. It's a very addictive endeavor, but great fun if you enjoy history and have a feeling for the humans who lead to your existence. Or if you're worried about kissin' cousins...

  3. No. you are not related to your first cousin's wife nor her first cousin on the strength of the marriage that you cite.

  4. No you are not related to his wife, BUT their kids will be your second cousins.

  5. Yes..shes your cousin right? so yeah u guys r related.

  6. You are related only by marriage.  So if you are wanting to date the cousin, go ahead.
