Question:

Are we still using power electricity with the plug still plugged in, but we turn off the electonics?

i just want to know for example a tv is plugged in the wall but you turned it off by the button and the plug is still plugged in. does that mean its still on? or just using a little or none power.

  1. The older sets were clear off when you turned them off, but modern TV sets have an internal clock and memory, and other amenities which use a small amount of electricity when ever the power cord is plugged in.

    The amount of electricity consumed in off mode is not significant, it would be less than one of those little night lights that plugs into an outlet.  However, when you add it up for millions of TV sets, it becomes a significant amount.


  2. alot of times your not using alot of power very little is used in a power supply until the on switch asks for power. even a fuse uses power anything that resistance hits uses alittle power not much though

  3. One term for it is "idle power". TVs, computers, VCRs, cable boxes, etc. use a small amount of power to keep the circuits ready to use and the clocks running. CRT based TVs might keep the tubes warm so they start faster. VCRs listen for the infrared remote and some actually tune in TV stations to check the time of day. Cable boxes get updates from the cable company constantly. If the power button on your PC serves double duty as the sleep button, your computer's never really off. And the list goes on...
