  1. You are in the safest place you could be.  Stay away from windows in case there are strong winds and hail.  If lightning was to strike your house, the framework and metal would conduct the charge safely around you.  If you are under a tornado warning, go to the lowest level of the house (a basement is best) and in an interior room away from windows.  In all likelihood you will be just fine that way.

  2. the safest place to be in a lightning storm is in a car since its grounded. some people say that because of the rubber but its not true. but if theres a tornado, the safest place is a basement.

  3. Dont' worry, you'll be ok. Odds of you getting hit by lightning are pretty slim. The tornado is going somewhere else.

  4. Being inside a building during a lightning storm is generally quite safe. Of course you don’t want to be talking on the phone (cordless or cellular excepted), holding on to plumbing fixtures, or working with electrical appliances.

While tornadoes can be highly destructive and are potentially deadly, timely precautions can save lives and reduce property damage. During active weather, stay alert of the forecast by listening to radio or television or by using a NOAA Weather Radio. Contact your local National Weather Service (NWS) office, emergency management agency, or American Red Cross chapter for more information about your risk from tornadoes.

  5. no.  severe thunderstorms often generate tornadoes.  A tornado can kill you very easily, but your chances of dying in a tornado are statistically very low.  While Long Island might occasionally have a tornado, it would be rare.  Most occur in the midsection of the country, but no state is immune.  Lightning rods are not completely effective.  But being in a structure pretty much protects you from lightning although your roof might suffer damage.

  6. Relax,sweetie.

I'm on LI also and if you've noticed,we've had alot of warnings of tornadoes this week It's not likely around here..Just listen to what everyone has told you already and stay away from windows and go to the basement if you need to.
