You buy an actual plush stuffed animal that you can hold, and then it comes with a tag on it that has a code you type into webkinz.com and you get a virtual copy of that Webkinz to play with online.

They are not "real", like actually alive... with thoughts and a beating heart. Although there is no harm in pretending. :) Unless you are pretending that your webkinz is telling you to create mass murder... then there is a problem. With you. Not with the webkinz.
