  1. The answer is yes and no.

Normally, a website is just a special file that's available from a web server.    Your browser sends a request for that page to the server and it replies by sending that page.    If the page does not do any special interaction with the server, then that "site" is not connected to any other site.

Now, IF that web page that you requested DID do some interaction with the server, that interaction could involve sending a request for information to another server over the Internet.   Such a request would usually utilize what's known as "web services" - and in that regard, yes, the two sites could be thought of as being "connected".

A good example of a web service is when you buy something from an online business and their shopping cart calculates the exact shipping or postage for the item based on your location and its weight.  That usually involves using the web services that UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc. make available to their customers.   The shopping cart doesn't know how much it will cost, so by means of a web service interface, it "asks" UPS, for example, how much they'll charge to send that particular package, and UPS' server computes the charge and sends back the information.

  2. Yes.  That is what the Internet is.  Many thousands of computer systems all interconnected.
