“Very small sandwiches,

very small” you laugh

at her and she twists a brow

while you take three

instead of one waiting

for the “tsk tsk”

chewing the tension anticipating

the ham she dresses down

the bride spits out the groom

and you take a fourth

red winespots in your eyes

waiting for the fuzz

of indifference to tickle

the cheeks “Too young,

way too young”

and why the h**l not?

has been scratching your jaw

and finally trips on your tongue

and the scowl twists

the already twisted brow

your silence speaking for you

you contemplate a fifth

but you’re done thinking

in terms of sandwiches.
