    In science fiction shows like the ones you mentioned, "race" is used as a synonym to "species". In these fictional universes, different species are said to have evolved separately in different planets. They are very different biologically, which means that, generally speaking, they cannot interbreed, although some combinations are apparently compatible, at least for recreational s*x.

    White / Black / Asian are, for the lack of a better term, different 'sub-types' of the same species. They have a common genetic heritage and have evolved side-by-side with a lot of interbreeding. As a result, they are essentially identical from a biological standpoint, despite some obvious differences.

    In the Babylon 5 universe, a closer analogy to the difference between White / Black / Asian is the difference between the Hyach and the Hyach-doh, or the difference between the green-skinned and the blue-skinned Drazi.
